GUIDE · AIunipedia Community
The cheapest model call is not necessarily the cheapest completed task. Retries, retrieval, tool calls, human review and failed attempts can change the economics of a workflow.
Cost depends on the model you choose and the work required to reach an acceptable result. Compare local AI with hosted APIs using the same task and quality requirement.
Build a measurement sheet
For a representative request, record input size, output size, model calls, tool calls, retrieval time and any review required. Use your provider's current billing rules rather than a remembered price from an old article.
Measure time to first visible output separately from time to completion. Report a distribution of timings, including slower cases, rather than only the fastest demonstration.
Define success before optimising
For a support assistant, a plausible definition might require a factually supported answer, correct escalation and no unauthorised action. State your actual rubric. A quick response that must be rewritten may cost more overall than a slower usable one.
Run a small comparison: the baseline, a shorter prompt and a candidate alternative model. Keep the task set fixed. Include the cases where the cheaper configuration fails and the fallback work it triggers.
Set limits in the application
Bound output length, agent steps and retries. Decide what happens when the request exceeds its budget. Explain limits to the user in useful language rather than silently returning a partial result.
