A token is a unit used by a model's tokenizer. It may correspond to a word, part of a word, punctuation or other text representation. There is no universal conversion from words to tokens across languages and models.
A context window limits how much information a model can process in a request. It does not establish that every sentence inside that window will be used correctly. Input limits, output budgets and application behaviour also vary.
Context limits affect both the prompt you write and the document chunks supplied by a retrieval system. More text is useful only when the right evidence remains available to the model.
A practical debugging exercise
Take a long fictional policy document and place a small, checkable fact near the beginning, middle and end. Ask a question requiring each fact. Keep the document and questions fixed while testing different context arrangements.
Record:
- The tokenizer/model and relevant settings.
- Input length measured by the appropriate tokenizer.
- Any truncation performed by your application.
- Whether the answer used the correct passage.
- The effect of adding irrelevant material.
The purpose is to separate “the text was sent” from “the system used it reliably”. Do not present one successful example as proof that long-document reasoning is solved.
Before buying more context
Check whether your task needs the entire document at once. Clearer structure, relevant excerpts or retrieval may be a better first experiment. Each approach introduces its own failure modes, so compare on the same questions.
Discussion: Have you encountered a case where shortening the context improved the answer? What did you remove, and how did you judge the result?
